Turmeric Medicated Chocolate

I truly love chocolate, in all forms. But dark chocolate is definitely my favorite! The darker the better for me. And when I learned during my rotation at American Botanical Council that you could make MEDICATED chocolate I think my world changed.

For those of you who don't know much about turmeric, it's crazy good at lowering inflammation in the body. BUT the catch is, you have to take the proper medicated amount (at least 1.5 grams/day) every day consistently for it to take effect in your body. 

"You're saying I HAVE to eat this chocolate everyday then?" Yes, yes I am. Lucky us, right??

However, since this chocolate is medicated there are two things to be cautioned about: 1) measuring is very important to ensure you receive the benefits. 2) You should not consume large amounts of this chocolate in one day. Stick to the dosing amount specified!

Another warning - turmeric will stain everything in its path, so beware. Don't cook in your best shirt. Or let it get on your white countertops....not that I would know about that........

Turmeric Medicated Chocolate

Servings: (depends on container...read below)


  • 17 ounces of 70% chocolate bark (Trader Joe's is where we got ours)
  • 7 ounces coconut oil
  • 4 ounces turmeric powder (1 ounce is 28.345 grams)
  • 2 tsp ground black pepper (for better absorption of turmeric, you don't taste it)


  1. Melt chocolate in a double boiler - or in a metal bowl over a boiling pan of water
  2. Bring chocolate to 88-95 degrees to temper the chocolate - providing a smoother finished product
  3. Add turmeric powder and black pepper
  4. Add melted coconut oil and whisk thoroughly
  5. Pour into a container
  6. Estimate grams turmeric per dose after recording final yield.

I put mine in a sealed container. Knowing how many grams of turmeric you have when using 4 ounces, you know how many pieces of chocolate to make if each needs to be 1.5 grams... If you know how many grams are in your particular container, you know how to score the chocolate as it cools and break later into that amount of squares.

Also helpful, using ice cube trays (preferably silicone so it comes out easy) and spooning the allotted amount into each. For us, it was about 1 tbsp = 1.5 grams.
