Instead of a Lot of Added Sugar, Try This Sweet Fruit Instead!
Through my dietetic internship I get to go to some really COOL places. The most recent one was American Botanical Council. I learned all about herbal medicine and how to medicate certain foods like the Ashwagandha Energy bites I posted a few weeks ago. I don’t know about y’all, but if I can eat something delicious and feel amazing inside and out because of it, I am all for that.
You probably saw my instagram posts during my time at ABC about how amazing dates are. I got to do research on date fruits and their health benefits during my two weeks there and you guys, they’re amazing. I’ve been raving to all my friends about them, and eating a ton of them. I wanted to do a quick summary of what I learned for you guys!
Nutrition Facts: Dates contain 70% digestible sugar (think glucose, fructose, and sucrose). Yet, they’ve been shown to stabilize blood sugar levels because of their high levels of fiber (~1.6 grams per date). They contain more calcium in one cup than one cup of broccoli……yes, you heard that right. More magnesium and iron than one cup of spinach, and more potassium than one cup of bananas! So ya, not only are they delicious, but they’re packed with vitamins, minerals, fiber, and healthy fats.
Health benefits of the fruit: reduce oxidative stress in the body with their antioxidant power, which helps protect your cells from damage. They also increase digestive health and inhibit tumor growth in the body from all of their crazy vitamins and minerals.
My fav: Medjool dates – they are huge and delicious and so sweet. They’re also so easy to blend into food products because they are so soft. Don’t have a food processor? No worries, me neither. I usually borrow a friends. But I have been able to recently blend Medjool dates with a regular blender or NutriBullet!
Eat up! These little guys are incredible. & please share the nutrient love with any amazing date recipes you may have!
